A post partum doula can be helpful for any new (or
experienced) mother.
Some countries, such as the Netherlands,
routinely provide post-partum doula care for new mothers.
A post-partum doula offers families evidence-based information
and support with the following:
- More successful at breastfeeding and breastfeed longer
- Bond more quickly with their babies
- Less likely to experience post-partum depression
- Decreased maternal exhaustion, frustration, and apprehension
- Increased confidence in handling your newborn and recognizing newborn cues
- Greater understanding of newborn emotional and physical needs
- Ability to filter the overwhelming and often differing advice from family, friends, and others on newborn care

Research on human mother's milk confirms
its many advantages. Babies who are breastfed
have a decreased chance
of developing many problems including the following:
- Respiratory and ear infections
- Allergies
- Asthma
- Urinary tract infections
- Diarrheal infections, gastrointestinal reflux, and NEC
- Bacterial Meningitis
- S.I.D.S.
- Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Childhood lymphomas such as Hodgkin’s Disease and Leukemia
Current research indicates that human milk’s protective
qualities last well into adulthood.
Adults who were breastfed as infants
have a decreased risk of developing:
- Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease
- Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Obesity
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Breast cancer
Women who breastfeed have a lower risk of developing the following:
- Ovarian, endometrial, and breast cancer
- Osteoporosis
- decreases need for insulin if the mother is Diabetic
- Mother's who breastfeed are providing their infant with completely balanced and perfect nutrition
